ABOUT THE HOT HOUSE SERIES
Paintings

My passion for Jazz led to The Hot House music series. My influences derived from; my husband the musician, attending musical performances and listening to my local radio Jazz station WBGO. While working in my studio I heard trumpeter Wynton Marsalis playing his music. At the end of the song, the radio jock mentioned the name of his CD as Hot House Flowers. It offered me the perfect name for the new body of work.

By using my photo collection of live performances, for my paintings, I became inspired to use deep contrasting colors where musicians are immersed in colorful spotlights and capture their changing facial gestures. In these still images, they are transformed into caricatures, all seeming to be either in pain or pleasure as they attempt to reach a particular note.

In contrast to the paintings these Hot House collages, created in 2016 are a direct reflection of the paintings. My intent with these collages is to fuse layers of textures, play with asymmetry and space creating a simple composition of musicians performing. The smaller compositions give me freedom to explore and enjoy the completed pieces while experimenting.
